Scabiosa Atropurpurea

How To Have A Healthy Scabiosa Atropurpurea

Scabiosa atropurpurea or pin cushion plants can be a nice addition to any garden. In mid summer these plants produce unique flowers that come in a few different colors. The flowers can be rich burgundy, fuchsia, pink and white and they also have a distinctive feature. They have tiny white petals that grow throughout the flower and they appear to look like pins in a cushion. This is how the scabiosa atropurpurea got its name.

The pin cushion plant is an annual which means it only lives for one season. But there are also types of scabiosa atropurpurea that are perennial plants. It can grow up to thirty six inches in height and space out a full nine inches. The foliage is a light green color and the stems that hold the flowers are long and spindly. They are used for boarding plants most of the time but they can also be placed anywhere in the garden to enhance its look. Most of the flowers that are related to this type of plant have no scent. But the scabiosa atropurpurea blooms have a delightful, soft scent that lasts all summer.

Because this plant has such interesting flowers, people are growing them in their gardens. They will thrive in any climate where the temperature does not go below freezing and do better in warmer states like Texas or Florida. But there are a few other things to consider if you would like to keep healthy pin cushion plant.

This type of plant likes a bit of alkaline and organic matter in the soil. To make sure you have the right balanced soil, you can purchase a soil tester at any garden center. This is a good way to make sure any plants you use are getting the proper nutrition to grow and thrive. If you do have a lower alkaline level, you can add a bit of lime to the soil and mix thoroughly. You can just simply plant the scabiosa atropurpurea with out checking the soil but you run the risk of not having very many blooms or an unhealthy plant.

It is best to purchase a few of these plants when they are small and adapt them to your garden. You can do this by keeping them inside during the night and putting them out in the sun every day for at least six hours. After three to four days the plants should be used to being outside and they can be planted in the garden.

If you are only planting a few pin cushion plants, you can place them on a small hill so that the water can drain away from the root system. But if you are planting more than a few in a row, you should raise up the rows and include a small trench beside them. This plant does not do well if the root system has too much water around it. In fact, you should make sure that the soil is completely dry and sandy before watering it. If water is allowed to pool around the plant it can become severely damage or even die.

You will need to place the plants in direct sunlight. They do not do well in shade and if placed there, the plant may not produce any flowers. You may also have to be careful of surrounding them with plants that can over shade them. Make sure that you choose the right companion plants for your pin cushion flowers.

These flowers make excellent bouquets and last a long time even after they are cut. They can be dried and preserved and used in potpourri or for permanent flower arrangements.
